5 Reasons to Stay Away From Canola Oil

Nov 6, 2022Fitness, Primal Nutrition

Canola oil is not what you think it is…

1. Canola oil is technically an industrial crop, not a food crop. This means that there are no regulations placed on it in regards to how it is manufactured or the quality. In this regard, there is no telling exactly what is in this product. So, why is it in seemingly every food package on the market? This is because it is very cheap to use in the making of food products and it also gives it a longer shelf life. It does this by encapsulating it in fat. But, not just fat, canola oil is a trans fat.

2. Canola Oil is a trans fat. Trans fats are fats that have been artificially turned into partially saturated fats so they don’t oxidize, allowing them and the food product they’re in to last longer when they’re on the shelf. Trans fat raises your “bad” cholesterol and lowers your “good” cholesterol and a diet high in trans fat raises your risk of heart disease.

3. Canola oil comes from rapeseed. 93% of rapeseed comes from a GMO form, making canola oil almost surely genetically modified.

4. Rapeseed oil itself is toxic. It is not edible, as our bodies cannot break it down. In fact, it contains anti-nutrients. Anti-nutrients interfere with the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

5. During the processing transition from rapeseed to canola oil, they deodorize the canola oil so it does not smell like rapeseed. During this process alone all of the omega-3 fatty acids are stripped away, leaving an inflammatory omega 6.
